Since 1921 The Dayton Foundation has been helping people help others in Greater Dayton and beyond. In celebration of our 90th Anniversary in 2011, we listed below some interesting facts about the Foundation, including links to additional information about our founders, donors, significant grantmaking and leadership initiatives through the years.
The Dayton Foundation is honored to help more than 3,000 individuals who have estalished charitable funds at the Foundation to help others in our community and beyond.
90th Anniversary Facts
The Dayton Foundation, which serves Greater Dayton, was the idea of Dr. D. Frank Garland, then-director of welfare for the National Cash Register (NCR) Company and longtime civic leader. Support and startup funding came from John H. Patterson, founder and chairman of NCR, his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson.
Among the 700 community foundations in the nation, The Dayton Foundation consistently is ranked among the top 40 for new gifts, grants awarded and market value.
The Dayton Foundation is third among all community foundations in the nation for the number of gifts received and grants awarded - ranking higher than community foundations in some of our nation's largest cities.
In 2011, The Dayton Foundation surpassed over 225,000 grants totaling more than a half-billion dollars awarded to charitable organizations, thanks to our 3,000 fund donors.
Since its establishment, the Foundation's assets under management have grown from $250,000 in 1921 to $387.7 million as of June 30, 2011.
Legacy (planned and deferred) gifts total $189 million.
